Social Media can be a great way to advertise your business with a very minimal investment. But it can also take up time if you don’t have a plan for managing your content. In order to make social media work for your brand, you have to find a way to manage the amount of time you spend planning and posting. No one wants to feel like they are on their device ALL the time.
Luckily, with a little pre-planning and organization, it doesn’t have to be a burden. I’ve got some great tips for how you can manage your own social media accounts in less time.
Pick your networks. If you are already on social media but you are feeling overwhelmed, take a minute and make sure that each network is working for you. Maybe it would be worth dropping one so you can focus better on the ones that are working for you. Quality is better than quantity in this case.
Figure out what your maximum and minimum posts on each network. Do you want to post 3x a week on Facebook at least and daily at most? There are lots of “recommendations” of how often you should post on each network - but it needs to work for you. Check out these recommendations and then pick what works for you within these recommendations.
Plan some of your content monthly, some of your content weekly and save daily posts for breaking news, live coverage of events, and other topics that can’t be planned in advance.
Have monthly content themes. In January, I start new content calendars - and put in themes for every month that are applicable to each brand. Things like harvest time or holiday shopping time - something that will help you create content and focus in on your goals for every month.
It is also useful to have some daily themes to help you build out content. Do you want to participate in #MondayMotivation hashtag community? Maybe your industry has it’s only daily theme like #WaterWiseWednesday that you want to post to. Do some research on these daily themes and try and find one or two that might work for you.
Don’t be afraid to use content you didn’t create - just use it minimally. You want to make sure your providing some benefit or information to your followers so some of your content needs to be one of a kind - but it doesn’t have to be all of it.
Make sure your following the 80/20 rule and only posting soft asks or hard asks 20% of the time, while providing useful information, tips and entertainment the rest of the time. The idea behind social media is to build a following for your brand - not necessarily making every person a customer, member or contributor.
